Take the Time to Laugh at Lovecraft in The Innsmouth Case
Usually when people think of Lovecraft they think of all the horror. There’s a reason for that. However, some people have found a way to laugh at the tropes present in the genre. A recent visual novel is one such case (puns! get it?) with The Innsmouth Case hitting store shelves. So if you ever needed someone to make fun of Lovecraft once in a while, this is the game for you.
You’ll play as a detective who finds themselves hired to find a missing child named Tabitha Marsh. The kid went missing in the mysterious town of Innsmouth, which is apparently a pretty short bus ride away from Boston, which checks out. While the game may be all about the humor, it doesn’t change the fact that you are going to a town made up of all sorts of Lovecraft tropes. There’s plenty of monsters and unfortunate citizens looking to murder you.
Yes you can die, a lot. The Innsmouth Case features not one or two, but twenty seven different endings. They range from dying, to death, to becoming a ritual sacrifice, to all sorts of other bad fates. Hold out long enough, and you may just find Tabitha and get one of the good endings. Or maybe you can find some romance along the way as well, I am certain one of the fish people could offer some love. There’s always romance in the visual novel genre.
As an aside, if we’re taking the time to bring back games making fun of cosmic horror tropes, any chance the Shadow Hearts series can make a return? Maybe? It’s okay, I’ll wait.
If The Innsmouth Case sounds like your kind of game, you can grab it on Steam now. If you’re not sure if it’s for you, there’s also a demo you can try.
