Death’s Gambit: Afterlife – A Big Expansion to the 2D Souls-Like Coming to Switch

Death’s Gambit: Afterlife, an expanded version of the 2018 very hard souls-like platformer Death’s Gambit is coming to Nintendo Switch. It was announced today during the IGN Expo, one of the many presentations happening during the 2021 Summer of Gaming. Developer White Rabbit and publisher Serenity Forge are touting new story beats, weapons, abilities, and modes. The original was already a formidable game. Death’s Gambit: Afterlife looks to double the amount of content currently on offer in the original game. The original Death’s Gambit was a hard-as-nails metroidvania that drew heavily from the dark fantasy elements of From Software’s seminal Souls series. In Death’s Gambit you played Sorun, who was a knight brought back to life by Death theirself to destroy the source of immortality in a dark fantasy land filled with monsters. Giant bosses with giant-er health bars were there as well, of course.

What’s currently on display looks great. A trailer for Death’s Gambit: Afterlife led the announcement showcasing some of the new features coming to the new edition. one of the biggest features teased was a balance and tune to parts of the original experience. It highlights 10 new levels, 6 new bosses, 22 new weapons, and multiple endings. These additions will make Death’s Gambit: Afterlife the definitive edition of Death’s Gambit. The core gameplay loop will hopefully remain unchanged, with the player moving through a dark world, fighting enemies and bosses. Featuring crisp pixel graphics and a tight control scheme, Death’s Gambit was one of my favorite games of 2018. I’m beyond excited about this upcoming Switch release.

No release date for this bigger, expanded edition has been confirmed. It’s unknown at this time whether Death’s Gambit: Afterlife will come to the games original PS4 and PC platforms. We’ll let you know, as soon as we know.
