Ultra-Indie Preview: Selaco, The House That DOOM Built
Hello, you glorious gluttons for all things indie horror! Are you just starving for the newest of the new, the most unknownest of the unknown? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to the Ultra-Indie Preview! In this series, we’re going to steal DreadXP writer Jesse G.’s column, and pick a new game from an indie horror creator you’ve probably never heard of, and that hasn’t released! No million-dollar budgets or factory productions. This is the space for the little guy with not but a developer toolkit and a dream. So if you’re down to roll the dice on something different, then stick around and check it out!
Today we’re looking at Selaco by the aptly named (for the moment) Selaco Games. This retro first person horror shooter is built using the GZDOOM engine. To quote the developers FAQ, “A retro FPS at heart, Selaco wouldn’t feel as ‘authentic’ if it were being made a more modern engine”. You’ll be playing as Dawn, voiced by Melissa Medina (Mechwarrior 5), the Security Captain of an underground bunker on Mars, years after the fall of earth. The gameplay shown so far has been fast, mean, and fluid. Taking inspiration from games like F.E.A.R, Quake, and DOOM, Shotguns provide proper oomph and characters whiz around like friction was just a fleeting idea Da Vinci once had, and then disregarded.
So far what has been showcased is insanely promising. On April 2nd Selaco Games opened a Patreon page to fund the ongoing development of their game, with a playable demo being teased. Being released in three parts, the devs have committed to making a game that works even on ultra low-end hardware. Going back to the FAQ, it’s described as, “…highly customizable graphics setting should allow you to play it even on low-end laptops”. So retro shooter fans of the world rejoice! You’ll be circle strafing, bunny-hopping, and shotgun blasting before you know it. Planned to release in three parts, hopefully we’ll see part 1 in 2021.
