Encodya Looks to Make the Dystopian Future Cute
In the real world we’re heading towards a dystopia where everything is controlled by businesses looking to make a buck off of you. Thankfully we have video games like Encodya, which show that future but at least it’s kind of cute.
The game puts you in the role of an orphaned 9 year old named Tina and her robotic protector SAM-53, both of whom live in Neo-Berlin in the year 2062. You can tell it’s the future by the towering skylines, the flying cars, and the fact that the city name starts with Neo. The game is looking to combine “the sweetness of Studio Ghibli, the setting of Blade Runner, and the humor and gameplay of Monkey Island,” and going by what they’ve shown so far it seems to be making that.
The game is based on a short film known as Robot Will Protect You, so it has some roots in something interesting. However, it also looks like it’s looking to make its own style. The game has a lovely 2.5d art style that really makes it stand out, and the sweeping shots of the city are rather lovely. The trailer shows that you can swap between the two characters freely, and you’ll be doing so to help solve adventure game style puzzles.
If Encodya looks like your jam, you can add the game to your wishlist here. It’s set to launch on January 26th, 2021.
