Hello, you glorious gluttons for all things indie horror! Are you just starving for the newest of the new, the most unknownest of the unknown? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to the Ultra-Indie Daily Dose! In this series, we’re going to pick a new game every day from an indie horror creator you’ve probably never heard of. No million-dollar budgets or factory productions. This is the space for the little guy with not but a developer toolkit and a dream. So if you’re down to roll the dice on something different, then stick around and check it out!
Welcome back for a Daily Dose! Our game today is Shrine II by indie developer Scumhead. Created in the Build Engine id Tech 1, best known for DOOM, this game is of a similar ilk, much the same and also wildly different.
In Shrine II you play as Tusk, a man(?) without skin and with much anger to work out. Finding himself in a hellish landscape full of demons and ammo pickups, Tusk gets to work doing that classic Build Engine id Tech 1 thing. Shooting. He shoots them. That’s how it goes.
Shrine II is hard, really really hard. It’s not your standard DOOM style game. There are over 20 weapons in Shrine II, all of them weird. Many of the weapons are atypical, and you’ll find yourself relying a lot on grenades, melee weapons, and projectiles that often do a status effect instead of conventional damage. But that’s one of the many ways that Shrine II is interesting to play.
